Watercolor
	1 Beginning/Continuing Watercolor Begin at the beginning! This class is for beginners and other painters who want to know the basics: color mixing, mingling, glazing, gradients, values, transparency and composition. New painters and former painters are all welcome. Continue to develop skills and mastery. Taught by demonstration and individual attention. 	3 & 4 Watercolor Painting This class concentrates on the development of watercolor painting skills. For beginning students, the emphasis is on understanding the tools and the use of the medium to build confidence and knowledge of essential artist's principles. For returning students, the emphasis is on enhancing skills and taking risks to expand facility, deepen understanding of the medium and develop a personal style. 	5 Landscape Drawing Foundations in Watercolor First this class focuses on drawing skills that underlie a successful landscape painting, learning to compose a high-value contrast drawing from a photo. Then learn to translate this drawing into a watercolor painting. Transparency washes, composition, value and paint handling will be covered, with frequent demonstrations. 	6 Watercolor Critique This class is for students who have accomplished facility with watercolor. The emphasis will be on helping students continue to develop their skills and personal style. Taking risks will be encouraged in order to expand one's skill range and to develop new facility with the medium. 	7 Intermediate/Advanced Watercolor Geared for students already knowledgeable in watercolor skills, the focus is on problem solving and critique with gentle motivation and direction. Soft chalk-pastel techniques are also offered to teach highlighting and texture skills. 	10 Find Your Own Style Beginners to advanced, this class is taught like an independent study, where the students can choose their own subject matter-landscape, still life, abstract and/or collage-to develop their own style and learn new techniques. 	12 Color Theory/Beginning Oil Painting This course is designed for artists new to oil painting, but continuing students are welcome. 	13 Landscape and Plein Air Painting Students will create ambitious landscapes on location. The course stresses complete development of small finished paintings through various stages. 	18 Plein Air Landscape - Outdoors Students learn techniques of impressionistic color application in their preferred media. Instructor will call students with site information. 	20 Modern and Abstract Art Group Master the complex and elusive art of modern and abstract using painting and drawing on canvas and paper. Find new ways to describe and relate your art to your audience. This course will open new possibilities using abstract as language in your art. 	21 Abstract Figurative Painting We will deconstruct modern & contemporary themes as students develop a unique voice in their painting. Various methods of abstracting from life will be visited with the human figure as a subject, using the live model and photographs as a reference. 	23 Portrait Painting in Oil or Pastel Analysis of head structure and traditional techniques will be explored through gesture, proportion, shadow shapes, as well as techniques in skin tone color mixing. 	24 Still Life Painting This is a focused introduction to still life painting. Students learn to indicate simple forms with a single light source. 	29 Pastel Learn techniques and impressionistic color application in pastel. Students work from actual setups or personal photos using various foundations and types of soft pastel. 	34 Advanced Chinese Brush Painting This class is based on demonstration and instruction in the methods of the old Chinese masters and modern Chinese painters. We study the use of ink, water and watercolor on rice paper with emphasis on brush control. Advanced. Currently offered only for previous students of Mr. Hau or by special permission. 	37 Analysis of Form/Beginning Drawing This class focuses on drawing basic forms and proportions, measuring height and width, etc. Students of all levels are able to develop a solid foundation upon which to build their emerging artistic skills. 	38 Head Drawing This class is geared towards students who want to learn to draw the head and achieve a greater likeness. 	39 Travel Sketching First class meets at the Pacific Art League in the Norton Gallery. We will focus on keeping a "visual journal" for fresh, spontaneous recordings of your surroundings. Printmaking
	42 Beginning Etching with Aluminum Etching is used to make limited editions of original art. Learn how to transfer designs, prepare plates and print with an etching press. We will explore how to etch line, tone and aquatint using a variety of non-toxic grounds and stop-outs. Students will develop an understanding of etching using the aluminum plate & copper sulfate bath method. This class is appropriate for beginners as well as artists who have worked in other mediums. 	48 Uninstructed Figurative Sculpture This open studio provides an opportunity for sculptors who can work independently to work from a model in a congenial atmosphere. 	49 Stone Carving This class teaches the carving of soft stone using hand tools: roughing out the initial shape, detailed shaping, polishing and sealing. Beginners start with a small stone; more advanced students work on large stones and more complex projects. 	50 Sculpture with a Model This class teaches basic techniques using clay as a primary medium to make permanent sculptures without casting. Advanced students may continue to work on other types of sculpture started in previous classes. Sculptures will be fired at location given by instructor so that an appropriate real metal bronze patina may be applied. A list of supplies and tools needed will be discussed at the first class. 	52 Exploring Watercolor and Drawing 8 - 14yrs This class is designed to introduce the student to drawing, composition, watercolor, and a variety of techniques that are appropriate to move young students into the more complex world of art studies. 	54 Explorations in Art 5 - 8yrs This class will concentrate on the elements of design such as line, shape, color, space and texture in drawing, painting, collage and 3-D assemblage. Open Studios
Open Print Room $200 for 10-day punch card (good for 6 months) $25 for single day The Print Room is open during business hours whenever there are no classes scheduled. It is generally unmonitored. If you need assistance with the use of the room, please check the schedule for hours when a Monitor will be present. You must either be a member or currently enrolled in a printmaking class to use the Open Print Room. For available days and times, please call the League at 650- 321-3891.

	58 Digital Darkroom using Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Adobe's Lightroom software has greatly simplified processing digital camera 'RAW' files. In this class, you'll learn a basic workflow for 'dialing in' RAW images with Lightroom, then explore techniques for making your images pop. You'll have hours of hands-on practice, first with sample images that will be provided, then on your own photographs. Bring a laptop with Adobe Lightroom (2.6 or later preferred, 3.0 Beta is fine as well) installed, a power cord, and ten RAW images of your own work with good composition and focus that you'd like to work on. 	63 Matting and Framing This one-day workshop is geared to works on paper, and students should bring a small artwork, and, if they wish, a frame. 	66 Yoga for Artists This yoga class will help you let go of tension in your body, then move onto tapping into your creative power that all resides within. We will start with neck and shoulder openers to relieve the aches and pains of long periods of standing at the easel, sitting over a table, or the potter's wheel. Then we will move into some easy standing and flowing poses, and hip openers. Finally ending with a seated meditation to leave you feeling inspired and ready to create! 	77 Mixed Media Sculpture Work with ceramic clay shards, fiber, metal, glass, cloth, paper and paint, and create a sculptural form using a "Procaustic" technique.
