Spring is here and we have some great new classes!  The Pacific Art League in Palo Alto is taking registrations now for a wide variety of classes in Spring Quarter 2008.  Classes begin April 7th.

In addition to our usual excellent roster of teachers, we have added three new instructors:

Mixed Media and Collage by Michael Azgour: Designed for all levels of students who wish to gain knowledge and incorporate mixed media and collage into their composition.  Classes include slide-assisted lectures, demonstrations, exercises, open art making, a field trip and group critiques to help students learn the practical and theoretical concerns of 2D mixed media and collage art making.

Expressive Drawing by Michael Azgour: A high energy class which teaches methods different from traditional academic approaches.  Students develop their own style as the course progresses from still-lifes to photographs to live models.

Adventures in Mixed Media by Tess Sinclair: A dynamic class where you may take inspiration from the teacher or follow your own path, working in 2D, 3D or a combination of both.  Designed for all levels of students.

Contemporary Art by Stella Zhang:  Beginning with discussions on the nature of art and connection with self, students of all levels will learn to translate their ideas and experiences onto canvas (or another material of their choice) using painterly applications as well as a variety of techniques and media.  Develop your artistic voice.

We also have two new classes by established instructors at the Art League:

Romantic Realistic Landscape Painting by Jared Sines is for admirers of John Constable or the Hudson River School, and for artists who would like to create similar evocative landscapes.  Study the techniques of the 18th and 19th century masters.

Landscape Drawing Preparation and Foundation of Watercolor with Robin Scholl is geared to preparing beginning watercolor students to create watercolor landscape.  Students will spend five weeks learning how to draw landscapes and seven weeks on the basics of watercolor and translating their drawings into paintings.

And it's not too late to mention two classes that were offered for the first time at the Art League just last quarter:

Magic Realist Painting by Jared Sines. This is for students who admire the "trompe l'oeil" paintings of the past such as the exquisite still-lifes produced by Dutch painters of the 16th and 17th centuries.  Jared teaches students how to paint in sharp focus on smooth masonite panels, creating jewel-like works of art.

Drawing Circus with Edward Stanton.  This is no ordinary figure drawing class.  Each session features at least one performing artist in theatre or dance striking short and moving poses (costumed and nude) in a partially staged ephemeral atmosphere, with lighting that varies from right and colored to dark and dramatic.  Each session is full of energy and music. Your imagination and art - and those of fellow artists - complete the performance.

Workshops

Workshops are an excellent and affordable means to "putting your toe in the water" to try and find a new or rusty interest.  We offer a wide selection of workshops throughout Winter Quarter.

We are particularly excited about workshops offered by Alla Viksne and Paula Leslie.  Alla is a professional artist and teacher specializing in oil painting, and Paula is a licensed therapist.  Together they can help you overcome the blocks you face in your creative life.  Unleash Your Creativity! is offered Sunday, February 3rd.  This gifted team also offer Selves and Strangers: The Masks We Wear on Sunday, March 23rd.  Why live half a life?  Join in the adventure of exploring what talents may be hidden behind your mask.

The Shamanic Journey series taught by long-time PAL instructor Linda Corbett is a unique path to releasing creative juices.  Four distinct and progressive sessions are offered this quarter:

  • Art Through the Shamanic Journey #1 (Sunday, January 13th)
  • Art Through the Shamanic Journey #2 (Sunday, February 10th)
  • Working on Your Muse through the Shamanic Journey (Sunday, February 24th)
  • Perceptions of Spirit (Sunday, March 23rd)

Stephen Wagner continues his 2-part Professional Development Workshop for Artists.  Participants are invited to bring along their Artist Packet or Portfolio for an open critique.  (Part 2 for those who have already completed the first workshop is scheduled for Saturday, January 26th.  New participants begin with Part 1 on Saturday, March 1st.)

Photographers are invited to take a look at the San Mateo Coast in an entirely new way in Joe Decker's two-day Digital Landscape Intensive workshop on January 12th and 13th.  Learn from Joe who just returned from Patagonia and last year presented a truly extraordinary exhibition on his work from the Arctic Circle.

Chris Golson's 2-part Creative Digital Photography on January 27th and February 3rd aims to teach how to tap into creativity as you shoot, rather than later on the computer. Follow up on Saturday, March 22nd with Chris' Photo Editing Adjustments and Picture Management Workflow.  And in between, consider Creative Natural Light Portraiture also with Chris.

In the two-day workshop, Moving Pictures of Downtown Palo Alto: Photo Collage on Canvas, instructor Leah Lubin teaches the use of canvas on frame as a base and paint to bring a three-dimensional look to photographs. (March 15th & 22nd)

Tess Sinclair invites you to "fall in love with the sweet smell of beeswax and the rich, glowing patina of encaustic collage" on Saturday, February 9th in Encaustic Collage for Everyone! March 1st, Tess offers Transfers - how to move ink from an image to your substrate of choice.

Ever wonder how to capture the irrepressible humor of political cartoonists?  In Steve Curl's Editorial Cartooning for Adults on December 8th, you'll learn to tell a story in a glance.

There's much more to consider.  Check out our website ?. www.pacificartleague.org  for additional classes and workshops.  And don't forget to visit our galleries - for a selection of unique gifts of art.

                                                                                  Sincerely,
